A Rolex Submariner Costs 3.57 Ounces of Gold Today. A Daytona Costs 9.34.

Two prices read on the same day, divided. The number changes whenever gold does, which is most of what this calculation actually shows.

A pre-owned Rolex Submariner asks a median $15,495 and a troy ounce of gold fixed at $4,335.55, so the watch costs 3.57 ounces of gold. A Daytona costs 9.34 ounces and an Air-King costs 1.75. Both halves of that division were read on the same day, which is the only way this calculation is worth anything, and the reason is the second half of this article.

How this was measured

The gold price is the afternoon fix published by the LBMA, taken on 9 August 2026: $4,335.55 per troy ounce, dated 2026-08-07. The watch prices are median asking prices for pre-owned examples listed by Bob’s Watches, read the same day, family by family. Dividing one by the other gives the number of ounces of gold a watch is currently priced at. Nothing else is done to either figure.

Two weaknesses in that are worth stating before the table rather than after it. The watch prices are what a dealer asks, not what anybody paid, and they come from a single dealer, because every independent watch price index this desk has approached refuses automated access. The gold fix is a wholesale benchmark set twice a day in London for bullion trading, so a private buyer purchasing a single coin pays more than it. Neither figure is a transaction price.

The ratios are the same as the dollar ratios, and that is the point

A Daytona is 5.3 times an Air-King in dollars and 5.3 times an Air-King in gold, because dividing every price by the same number changes none of the relationships between them. The ounce column adds no information about which Rolex is dearer. What it adds is a level: it answers what a watch costs in an asset rather than in a currency, and that is a question people ask constantly about watches and gold without anybody publishing the division.

The measuring stick moved 20 percent this year

Gold fixed at $5,405.00 on 2026-01-29, which is the highest in the whole gold series back to 1968, and it is now 19.8 percent below that. Twelve months ago it fixed at $3,383.75, so it is +28.1 percent higher than a year ago. Apply those to the Submariner’s current ask and it is 2.87 ounces at the peak price, 4.58 ounces at last year’s price and 3.57 ounces today.

Those three numbers describe gold. They do not describe the watch, and reading them as a fall in the gold value of a Rolex would be the single most available error in this subject. The watch price used in all three is the same $15,495, because that is the only Submariner price this publication holds. What the spread does prove is narrower and more useful: anyone quoting how many ounces a watch is worth is quoting a figure with a shelf life of weeks.

What this cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether a Rolex has held its value against gold, which is the question that brought most readers here. Answering it needs a series of Rolex asking prices going back years, and this desk holds one day of them. Gold has 14,657 daily fixes back to 1968-04-01; the watch side of the comparison has a single reading, taken on 9 August 2026. A ratio built from one moving series and one fixed point is not a history of anything, and this article does not present one.

It also cannot tell you what a gold Rolex is worth as metal. That calculation needs the weight of gold in a specific reference, which the listings do not publish and this desk has not weighed. Sample sizes are thin at the bottom of the table, with the Milgauss resting on 3 listings and the Deepsea on 5, so those two medians should be read as indicative. 2 of the 11 families are priced on fewer than ten listings.

Sources

The gold price is the LBMA Gold Price PM, the afternoon fix, published free by the London Bullion Market Association and refetched when this page was built on 9 August 2026. The series carries 14,657 daily fixes from 1968-04-01 to 2026-08-07, in US dollars per troy ounce. It is a wholesale benchmark for bullion settlement and is not a retail price for a coin or a bar.

The watch prices are median asking prices for pre-owned Rolex watches listed by Bob’s Watches, an American dealer, read on 9 August 2026 across 11 model families and reported family by family in pre-owned Rolex prices family by family. They are asks rather than realized sales, they are one dealer’s, and this publication states that on every watch article because no independent watch index permits automated access. Every ounce figure above is our own arithmetic on those two sources.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces of gold is a Rolex worth?

A pre-owned Submariner asks a median $15,495 against a gold fix of $4,335.55 per troy ounce on 9 August 2026, which is 3.57 ounces. The Rolex range on the same day runs from 1.75 ounces for an Air-King to 9.34 for a Daytona. The figure changes whenever gold does, which was +28.1 percent over the last year.

Is a Rolex a better investment than gold?

This publication cannot answer that and says so. Doing it properly needs years of Rolex prices measured the same way, and this desk holds asking prices from one dealer on one day against 14,657 daily gold fixes since 1968-04-01. What can be said is that the gold side of any such comparison moved +28.1 percent in twelve months and is 19.8 percent below its 2026-01-29 peak.

Why price a watch in gold at all?

Because gold is the asset watches are most often compared to, and the comparison is usually made without the division being done. It also gives a unit that is independent of any currency, which matters for a product priced differently in every market. On 9 August 2026 the whole Rolex range sat between 1.75 and 9.34 ounces.

What is the gold price used here?

The LBMA Gold Price PM of $4,335.55 per troy ounce, dated 2026-08-07 and read on 9 August 2026. That is the London afternoon benchmark, set once each afternoon and used to settle bullion trades, and it is the price a dealer works from rather than the price a private buyer pays for a single coin, which carries a premium on top of it. The same series has 14,657 daily fixes going back to 1968-04-01, which is why it is the measuring stick used here: no other price this publication can reach has that much history and no license attached. It reached $5,405.00 on 2026-01-29, its highest in the whole series, and today’s fix is 19.8 percent below that.
