For Those Who Want More

MICHELIN Now Rates Hotels. In Its First US Selection, 124 of Almost 1,000 Got a Key.

The Key arrived in 2024 and went worldwide in October 2025. For a category where properties have long awarded themselves stars, an anonymous inspector with a published method is a structural change.

The MICHELIN Guide spent a century rating restaurants before it began rating where you sleep. The MICHELIN Key arrived in 2024 at one, two and three levels, and from 8 October 2025 it went worldwide. For a category rated for decades by star counts that hotels awarded themselves, an outside assessor is a structural change.

How selective it actually is

In the United States, 124 properties took a Key from a recommended list of almost a thousand, with 11 reaching three Keys. France’s first selection ran to 189 establishments, 24 of them at the top level. Those ratios are the point. A rating that most applicants receive is a directory, not a distinction.

Why an independent rating matters here

Hotel star ratings have never meant one thing. They are assigned by national bodies, by trade associations, by booking platforms and frequently by the hotel itself, using criteria that reward facilities rather than experience. A property can hold five self-declared stars on the strength of having a business center.

MICHELIN’s method carries the flaws and the strengths of its restaurant work: anonymous inspection, a published methodology and a single distinction that means the same thing in Kyoto as in Lisbon. It is one opinion, consistently applied, which is considerably more than the category had before.

What the Keys reward

The Guide’s published criteria weigh architecture and design, quality and consistency of service, personality and character, value for the price, and contribution to the destination. The last two are the interesting ones. Value for price means an expensive hotel is not graded generously for being expensive, and contribution to the destination penalises the international property that could be anywhere.

How to use it, and how not to

A three-Key hotel is a destination in itself. A one-Key hotel has been inspected and found genuinely good, which is more information than most booking sites will give you. What the Keys do not do is rank hotels against each other within a level, or say anything about whether a particular property suits a particular trip.

Used well, the list is a filter rather than an itinerary. The global selection is searchable by destination, and the three-Key list is short enough to read in a sitting.
