A Median Breitling Asks $4,795. A Median Audemars Piguet Asks $39,245. Six Swiss Brands, Priced.

Every brand ranking calls it prestige. Priced on the same shelf on the same day, the gap between the cheapest and dearest is 8.2 times.

A watchmakers bench with loupe, tweezers and movement components

Every ranking of luxury watch brands puts Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet at the top and calls it prestige. Priced against each other on the same shelf on the same day, the gap is this: a median Breitling asks $4,795 and a median Audemars Piguet $39,245: a factor of 8.2. Rolex sits at $15,495, about 2.6 times Omega’s $5,995.

The entry point to a Swiss luxury watch is not $15,000. That figure describes Rolex, and Rolex has been mistaken for the category.

Six Swiss brands, priced on the same day

Pre-owned asking prices for six brands, read from one dealer on 5 August 2026. The middle-half column is the useful one: it shows where most of a brand’s stock actually sits, without the single outlier that stretches every range.

BrandSampleMedian askMiddle halfFull range
Breitling41$4,795$3,995 – $6,595$2,195 – $27,495
Omega30$5,995$3,995 – $9,295$1,495 – $17,495
Panerai42$7,145$5,595 – $9,795$3,995 – $44,795
Rolex45$15,495$10,295 – $23,295$4,595 – $62,495
Patek Philippe15$29,995$22,495 – $59,995$13,495 – $84,995
Audemars Piguet12$39,245$25,995 – $57,495$8,995 – $72,495

The sample column is not an inventory count. These are brand landing pages showing between 12 and 45 watches each; Rolex’s own family pages sum to 256 while its brand page displays 45. The counts describe what the page shows, so they are sample sizes and nothing more. Audemars Piguet at 12 and Patek Philippe at 15 are thin enough that their medians should be read as indicative.

Where these luxury watch prices come from, and the conflict in them

Every figure above is a pre-owned asking price read from Bob’s Watches, a dealer holding the stock it prices. An ask is the top of a negotiation, not a clearing price, and the gap between ask and sale is the dealer’s margin.

We use it and name it because the alternative is unavailable. No independent watch price index is reachable: WatchCharts, Chrono24 and rolex.com all refuse automated requests, and Rolex publishes no public secondary-market price list or service tariff. Every luxury watch price in general circulation traces to someone selling watches. Most rankings do not mention this.

1. Breitling and Omega: Swiss luxury under $6,000

Breitling had the lowest median in the sample at $4,795, with a middle half between $3,995 and $6,595. Omega followed at a median $5,995, middle half $3,995 to $9,295, and produced the single cheapest listing in the entire six-brand sample at $1,495.

Both are Swiss, both are mechanical, both are serviced by established networks, and both sit at roughly a third of Rolex’s median. Omega’s Speedmaster and Seamaster are the two watches most often named when people list icons that are not Rolexes, which makes the price gap harder to explain by reputation alone.

Do not read cheap as lesser. What separates these from the top of the table is scarcity and brand position rather than a deficiency you could point to on a bench.

2. Panerai: the middle, and the widest spread of the three affordable brands

Panerai came in at a median $7,145 with a middle half of $5,595 to $9,795, and a full range stretching to $44,795. That top end is nearly seven times the brand’s own median, the widest ratio of any brand in the sample outside Audemars Piguet.

A wide spread means the brand name tells a buyer very little about the price. With Panerai, as with Rolex, you are pricing a reference rather than a marque.

3. Rolex: 2.6 times Omega, and the reason people think Swiss means expensive

Rolex sat at a median $15,495, with a middle half between $10,295 and $23,295. That is about 2.6 times Omega’s median and 3.2 times Breitling’s, and it is the number doing the work in the popular belief that a Swiss luxury watch costs five figures.

Rolex’s floor is also higher than the field’s: its cheapest listing was $4,595, above Breitling’s $2,195 and Omega’s $1,495. There is no cheap way into Rolex, which is different from there being no cheap way into Swiss watchmaking.

Do not buy Rolex for the entry price. Buy it for liquidity, its family pages carry by far the deepest listing counts we have measured, which is the one advantage in this table that shows up when you sell rather than when you buy. Our family-by-family Rolex breakdown sets that out across 256 listings.

4. Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet: the top, on thin evidence

Patek Philippe showed a median $29,995 and Audemars Piguet $39,245, roughly double and two and a half times Rolex. Audemars Piguet’s median was about 8.2 times Breitling’s.

Both samples are small (15 and 12 listings) and both should be read as indicative rather than settled. Audemars Piguet’s range is also revealing: it starts at $8,995, below Rolex’s median, so the brand’s reputation as uniformly the most expensive is not quite what the shelf shows.

Do not treat these two as one tier. On this sample Patek Philippe’s middle half ($22,495 to $59,995) and Audemars Piguet’s ($25,995 to $57,495) overlap almost completely, while their medians differ by $9,250, which means the median gap is driven by sample composition, not by a real price step between the houses.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • Asking prices, not sale prices, from one dealer on one day.
  • Sample sizes, not inventory. The counts describe what a brand landing page displays.
  • Brand medians are not model prices. A brand median describes what happened to be on display, which skews with recent buying.
  • Nothing here is a forecast, and nothing here is advice about what any watch will be worth later.

Sources for these watch prices

All 185 pre-owned asking prices above were read from Bob’s Watches on 5 August 2026, across six brands from Breitling to Audemars Piguet. That source is a dealer and holds the stock it prices, a conflict we state rather than conceal, and one that is unavoidable here: no independent watch price index is reachable, because WatchCharts, Chrono24 and rolex.com all refuse automated requests and Rolex publishes no public price list.

The medians, quartiles, ranges and every multiple between brands are our arithmetic on those listings rather than figures the dealer publishes. Prices are asks on a single day and will move.
