Wang Jianlin was born on October 24, 1954 in Cangxi County, Sichuan Province, China. He served in the People’s Liberation Army for 16 years starting in 1970 before taking a desk job as an office administrator in Xigang District, Dalian. He became the Xigang Residential Development General Manager in 1989. It was said that Wang Jianlin founded Dalian Wanda Group in 1988 with only $80,000 and has served as its chairman since 1989. The company has four key sectors under its umbrella group, namely, Wanda Commercial Properties as its commercial real estate company, Wanda Cultural Industry Group as its branch in the culture and tourism industry, Wanda E-commerce and 99Bill as its businesses in the e-commerce industry, and Wanda Group’s chain of department stores. The continuing growth and success of Dalian Wanda Group has propelled its founder, Wang Jianlin, to become the wealthiest Chinese in the world with his $31.7 billion net worth. This has also given him the 29th place in Forbes 2015 list of The World’s Billionaires.


How did Wang Jianlin make his money?

From an initial investment of $80,000, Wang Jianlin became a self-made business tycoon who excelled in the real estate property business. His company portfolio currently holds 123 operating Wanda Plazas with 70 more Wanda Plazas under construction and 78 operating hotels with an additional 69 hotels under construction. It also operates 6,600 cinema screens and 99 department stores all over China. Wang Jianlin’s company is not only limited to the market in China, it also made its presence felt internationally when it purchased and operated buildings located in the USA, Spain, and Australia. Starting a business and leading it to achieve worldwide success enabled Wang Jianlin to author a book titled “Philosophy of Wanda Group: Wang Jianlin’s Business Management” where he shares his ideas and philosophies in running a business. The sale of 420,000 copies has added revenue to the brimming coffers of Wang Jianlin.
