Liliane Bettencourt is the married name of Liliane Henrietta Charlotte Schueller. She was born on October 21, 1922 to Louise Madeleine Berthe and Eugene Schueller and is their only child. She lost her mother when she was only 5 years old. She apprenticed in her father’s company at the age of 15, labeling bottles of shampoo and mixing cosmetic ingredients. She is the heiress of the L’Oreal Empire which was founded by her father in 1907. In 1950, when she was 27 or 28 years old, she married Andre Bettencourt, a French politician, then gave birth to her only child Francoise at the age of 30. When she was 35, she inherited the L’Oreal Empire and its fortune upon her father’s death. According to Forbes, Liliane Bettencourt has a real-time net worth of $42.3 billion as of October 18, 2015, ranking her number 10 in the Forbes list of billionaires around the world. Due to her advancing age and alleged dementia, Liliane Bettencourt is now under guardianship of her grandson Jean-Victor Meyers. Liliane Bettencourt became the principal shareholder of L’Oreal in 1957. The company then went public in 1963, with the majority of the shares retained by Bettencourt. She also bartered half her share of L’Oreal to obtain a three percent (3%) share of Nestle S.A. in 1974. In 2014, she reacquired an eight percent (8%) stake of L’Oreal from Nestle S.A., increasing her shares of stock to thirty-three percent (33%), equivalent to a real-time net worth of $42.3 billion.
