Jeff Bezos Net Worth: $49.5 billion
Jeffrey Preston “Jeff” Bezos is an American investor and entrepreneur. He showed his interest in science and technology at an early age. At the University of Florida, he joined the Student Science Training Program. He then went to Princeton University and studied BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. When he graduated, he worked in the field of computer science. Jeff Bezos currently has a net worth of $49.5 billion.
How did Jeff Bezos make his money?
He is now known as one of the innovators of e-commerce, having founded Amazon.com. Bezos is currently the CEO of the Web site, which was initially an online seller of books but has branched out to other products. A recent spike in Amazon’s stock price is said to hold majority of Bezos’ wealth. Amazon is currently the chief retailer on the entire World Wide Web.
In 1994, Bezos founded Amazon while on a road trip, where he mapped out the Web site’s details. In 2000, he founded Blue Origin, a human spaceflight company which was inspired by his fascination with spaceflight and exploration. The beginnings of the company were under wraps until a large land purchase made the company go public. The land was used for a launch and test facility. Bezos was also in discussion with Richard Branson, founder and Chairman of the companies Virgin Group and Virgin Galactic, regarding spaceflight prospects. In 2013, Bezos bought The Washington Post for $250 million and stated that the purchase bore no connection to Amazon and that he considered it as unchartered territory.
Although Bezos has received various forms of recognition, such as being Time Magazine’s Person of the Year in 1999 and Fortune’s Businessperson of the Year in 2012, he has received disparagement for the “grueling and inhumane” way the Amazon workforce was treated. He has also been called “stingy” for not making any major charitable donations and for being a skeptic regarding philanthropy. Amazon’s 0.5% donation of selected products’ sales for the Amazon Smile project has also been criticized by many for being biased.
