Christy Ruth Tallant Walton is one of the world’s leading philanthropists, giving large percentages of her wealth to charity. She is the widow of John T. Walton, one of the children of Sam Walton who started Walmart. She and her late husband have a son named Lukas. Christy Walton’s total net worth as of 2015 is $35.9 billion. With her active philanthropic projects, she  was estimated to have given $3.5 million cumulatively between 2002 and 2006. She has also served numerous non-profit organizations such as The Philanthropy Roundtable, the San Diego Zoological Society, The San Diego Natural History Museum, as well as the Mingei International Museum.

Christy’s donations have also spanned to property, as she donated her old Victorian home built in 1896 for the benefit of the International Community Foundation’s Center for Cross-Border Philanthropy. The preservation of the structure has cost Walton $4 million apart from the donation. She is also in support of her family’s charity, the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation, which has given scholarships to students as well as benefited colleges such as the University of Arkansas. In 2007, it was estimated that her family’s foundation has contributed over $1.6 billion.

Walton has been the richest woman in the world for eight years and the 8th richest person in the world, inheriting her husband’s wealth after he died in a plane crash. Majority of her earnings are from her husband’s Walmart shares, but a portion is also from First Solar, a project which her husband heavily invested in.
