Carlos Slim is a Mexican investor, businessman, and philanthropist. He’s one of the richest men in the world. As a teenager, Slim was taught business tactics and how to read financial statements. His fascination with numbers pushed him into majoring in civil engineering and taking economics courses during his college days in Chile. He then moved on to working as a stockbroker while he slowly built his empire. During Mexico’s financial crisis in the 1980s, Slim aggressively bought affected or undervalued businesses and sold them at higher prices later on. This tactic became one of his many tricks of the trade. Carlos Slim Helu’s holdings add up to a total net worth of $65.6 billion, which is equivalent to roughly 6% of Mexico’s gross domestic product. This ranks him as the 4th richest man in the world.

How did Carlos Slim Helu make his money?

Slim owns a huge business empire that is immensely influential in the Mexican economy and that accounts for approximately 40% of listings on the Mexican Stock Exchange. His conglomerate Grupo Carso carries a diverse range of businesses, from telecommunications, education, retail, healthcare, food and beverage, estate, airlines, and entertainment to technology, mining, oil, and sports among others. He is known as the chairman and chief executive of Telmex and América Móvil, two leading telecommunications companies in Mexico.
